Martin Jones: Musical Director – Music West Big Band

Martin first started playing trombone in the early 1980’s in Norfolk in the UK. Although primarily self-taught he was inspired by several of the peripatetic music teachers that visited his school along with his school music teacher.

As a teenager Martin played in local brass bands, orchestras & other ensembles until he discovered his musical home whilst playing for the Generation Big Band.

Work then got in the way and music took a back seat for a while until, whilst working on UN sanctions in southern Hungary in 1995/96 Martin became firm friends with an Arnhem based jazz guitarist who inspired him to start playing again. Since then, Martin has played with the Chris Walls Big Band, the Dave Derham Big Band in Norfolk and after moving to Derbyshire played with and led the Nottingham based Beeston Big Band until retirement in 2022 brought him to Co. Mayo where, as part of the Music West family, he leads the Music West Big Band.
