Music Ensembles
Music West aims to provide the opportunity for all musicians to participate in group performances. No matter what your age and whether you are a relatively new player or an experienced musician we have something to suit you.
Our range of Orchestras, Bands and Ensembles span a variety of age groups and experience levels. Our groups rehearse weekly during term times, providing musicians the opportunity to develop their musical skills in a fun and all inclusive environment. Please see below for details on our groups.
Mayo Concert Orchestra (Adults, grade 7+)
We regularly perform at community, charity and professional events such as backing Sean Keane and Brian Duffy. We play a range of music from classical favourites, musical themes, traditional Irish tunes & original pieces.
Mayo Youth Orchestra (Age 10 to 25, grade 2+)
Aiming to provide opportunities for young musicians to perform together, this talented group have performed in venues such as the National Concert Hall, Aras an Uachtarain as well as Italy and Vienna.
Castlebar Concert Band (Open to all)
A concert and marching Band which aims to bring classical, pop, jazz and marching tunes to Castlebar and beyond. We regularly participates in events including parades, civic events, sports fixtures, local festivals, pub trails and community concerts.
Music West Big Band (Adults, c. grade 5+)
Big Band playing the music of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Jools Holland, Caro Emerald and Michael Bublé etc. Open to saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass (double or electric), guitar and drum players as well as vocalists.
High Flyers Community Orchestra (Age 16+, Grade 3+ or equivalent)
Informal, supportive, non-intensive community orchestra which caters for all instruments. No mater whether you are learning or havent picked up your instrument in years, come and join us to play popular music favourites.
For Children ages 4-8 we operate a pre-instrumental active music-making programme “Music Magic” as well as music lessons on a wide variety of instruments for all ages and abilities.
For those musicians wanting to continue playing during the summer months we also operate the Summer Sessions ensemble.
In addition to our own ensembles the Music West building is also home to a number of affiliated groups, ensembles and choirs.
